It's getting worse across Australia for the dingo... The Northern Territory Government has made it easier for the pastoral industry to kill dingoes. The new regulations apply to pastoral leases. This is a whopping 45% of the Northern Territory. Dingoes prefer to feed on smaller animals-kangaroos and ferals such as goats, pigs, and rabbits. The Northern Territory is largely free of the scourge of feral goats. Elsewhere in the outback, where dingoes have been wiped out, there are massive infestations of feral goats which ravage bushland. Dingoes keep kangaroo numbers down. This reduces the grazing pressure on country, meaning there is more grass for cattle and hence greater profits-even if some calves are lost. Poisoning campaigns on cattle stations can increase the number of calves taken. Dingoes form strong territorial and hierachical packs. Older animals usually refrain from attacking cattle. Killing the top older dingoes in the pack can lead to an increase in stock deaths and injuries while inexperienced adolescent dingoes move in and run amok chasing, biting and killing more calves. Many individual graziers now refuse to poison dingoes for these reasons. Science and evidence based decission making is critical if we are to find ways to live within nature's means.
