WHELPING SEASON:

Dingoes generally have four biological seasons per year. They are breeding, whelping, rearing and training. It's whelping season now...

Dingoes are whelped during the winter months, usually in an underground den. Then during rearing and training the mum teaches the pups what to eat. It's more than just food - The mum will often bring back food but not allow the pup to eat straight away. She encourages the pup to sniff and explore it. It's the flavours of meat and the smell associated with that meat - that they learn to know what to eat and what to hunt. Pups normally are capable of independence at 3-4 months, but when in stable packs, they stay dependent for longer, until it's the next breeding season. Pups can stay with their parents for up to two years normally. During the second year they help with the rearing of the next litter.
